This new home, Lavender Bay House, takes full advantage of its location, with large volumes engaging with dynamic views across Sydney Harbour.

A luxurious residence for a family of five plus space for guests, it also includes a dedicated home office on one level, with dual terraces that provide expansive and introspective outlooks.

The steep site – which drops 16 metres from the street to the water’s edge – faces east, taking in a sweeping vista that includes Luna Park, the Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House.

A deep excavation was required to accommodate our clients’ brief and maintain view-corridors for surrounding properties.

From the street, the house reads as a single level, and the main entry sequence makes a feature of the Harbour Bridge’s north-western pylon.

Descending downstairs, a monumental in-situ concrete spine runs the length of the interior, connecting all five levels. Skylights bring light deep into the building.

Bedrooms are organised off this spine, and the open living spaces are arranged across the lower levels, which lead outside to the garden, the pool and the harbour’s edge.

“The Lavender Bay House was conceived and constructed over a 7-year period with the talented team at Tobias Partners. We worked closely with Richard Peters to turn our simple brief for a family home for five into reality. It was imperative that the design gave careful consideration not only to our personal needs but the unique location of the site in Lavender Bay given its rich history and iconic views. The finished house sits immaculately on Sydney Harbour. The views from every level provide a unique perspective of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, Luna Park and the city skyline. The main staircase connecting the levels provides its own adventure spanning the street to the harbour showcasing views, perspectives of light cast on an expansive off-form concrete wall coming through a series of skylights as well as landscaping spread in courtyards and roof gardens.” – Client

“Positioned along the North Shore with Sydney’s key icons in plain view, Lavender Bay House by Tobias Partners is a timeless home that takes cues from the harbour and city beyond. Though brutal and raw in its appearance, the family home emphasises its connection to the outdoors and embraces the importance of everlasting connections.” – The Local Project
