The existing building on this site is known as the Jewish Burial Society, or Sydney Chevra Kadisha, and it comprises a chapel, associated administration building and caretaker’s residence.
The Chevra Kadisha is significant because it is the only Jewish funeral home in New South Wales, so attends to all funeral arrangements and services for the Jewish community ‘in Sydney’ and surrounding areas.
This project entails architectural alterations and additions that will provide additional capacity for the chapel; better functioning facilities including disabled access; and upgrades to the residence.
The design will enhance the appearance of the existing building by providing a contemporary and sensitive addition, whilst maintaining the status of the existing chapel as a prominent landmark when viewed from the surrounding streets.
